PLNT Burger: Tasty Junk Food
I haven’t had a veggie burger in over a year, so I decided to visit a new place to try one. I went to my local Whole Foods, where a little PLNT Burger restaurant is tucked inside. This was my first visit to try out their fare. I like that everything on the menu is vegan, although all of it is overly processed food that should never be a regular part of any diet.
I chose the basic PLNT burger. It cost $9, including tax. It seemed like a lot to spend on such a tiny burger. But the Impossible Whopper at Burger King runs around $6 at most of their restaurants, and it has a similar nutritional profile, so the price seems almost reasonable.
According to their website, the PLNT burger has 390 calories and 20 grams of fat. A whopping 46% of the calories come from the added ultra-processed oil in the meal. That figure goes to 48% for their cheeseburger. What they use for the bun isn’t exactly healthy, either. They used potato buns and didn’t have any options for whole wheat. But that’s still better than regular hamburger buns. They top their burgers with lettuce, tomato, caramelized onions, and pickles.
The PLNT burger is tasty, but it is junk food. It’s basically an overpriced fast food restaurant. I doubt I’ll have another one here, but having a vegan burger at other restaurants will be an occasional indulgence — like, maybe once a year.
